I agree, but my parents want to check on their house, gather more clothing and small valuables. They talk as if they will be able to simply drive into and out of town. I worry about the availability of gas to get out if/when traffic is backed up and they are stuck for hours.

It's frustrating to feel so helpless. You might want to remind your parents that there are many car jackings happeneing all over town right now and that much of the available roadway will be jammed with emergency support vehicles. I really honestly don't think that Jefferson and Algiers are going to have to be away from their homes as long as those in the center of New Orleans. And with any luck the National Guard will get the looting under control so we don't have to worry about our things being stolen or set on fire.

Well somehow the reply got lost, lets try this again.
I am having the same problem with my evacuated family. They either can't understand or won't believe that this is not normal and that it will not be simply a quick trip home and then out.
I do have a question though. Does anyone know if the people that try to returnto get a few essentials will be allowed to have someone that does not live in the parish to help them? My mother lives alone, and we would like to drive her to the house (which than God from all reports is relatively undamaged) to get some things. We are concerned that we might not be allowed in and that she would have to go alone.

That is what I wanted to know and now I plan to wait and see what the outcome will be in the next week or two. Thanks for the information

I heard that a non-resident can go into the area, but A RESIDENT of Jeff parish has to be in the vehicle with them...

I saw the same thing. If a resident of Jeff parish has ID in the car non-residents can get in with them. If you go to nola.com and check out the Kenner Town Hall Form posting # 7154 for the rules of re-entry. It was posted as of yesterday. God bless you all! My parents are from the Kenner area and they want to go back too, not really just to get their stuff but to understand the extent of damage and to understand if they will ever have a home to go back to. They know they lost their home in Pass Christian MS so psychologically they feel the need to know. I am praying for all of you!

I got in on Sunday night to metairie, We were in my Friends pickup with Texas plates, the St. Charles Sheriff let us across the border no ?s asked just told we might get arrested if caught. We didn't spent the night, cleaned the fridge (RANCID!) grabbed some clothes and the Pet Bird and got out the next morning.
Some streets have electricity in Metairie, but ours didn't. There is NO running water. People that were waiting to get in SUnday, mostly wanted to get in and stay. I had several neighbors that never left and weren't leaving.
I won't be back until I have lights and A/C. Even then I don't know if or how long I'll be staying. I lived with 2 other people and I don't think they'll be back for Months and months.

My mother-in-law lives on Orpheum along the canal. She is in line at Airline and Norco and the traffic is really backed up. She would like to know if she can get off Airline at Williams to to West Metairie and then to Metairie Road. Does anyone know if that is possible? Thank you.
