My sister is staying with us in north Texas. We heard that E.J. HS roof blew off. Is there any truth to that or is it rumor? We are also hearing that schools in the greater N.O. area (Jefferson Parish) will probably not be open until December.?? December is only a rumor I heard on MSNBC and I do not know if it applies to the whole area. Does anyone have any factual information?
(Fact)Texas is accepting LA students without records. I called our school district myself and was told that Texas has waived any record requirements. We were going to enroll my niece on Tuesday, but are waiting to find out for sure if it is necessary. She attends East Jefferson High School.
(Rumor)I have read on nola.com forum that schools will open in October. I would like any phone number that will work to attempt to find out. My sister has been offered a teaching position here for as long as she can stay. If school is in fact going to open in October she will not need to take the job. I need any factual info with known phone numbers. My email is bruced@ci.sherman.tx.us Thank you

Diane Roussel is planning on being able to open the schools Jan. 19, opening one school at a time as they are ready, and putting two schools in the buildings on a half-day or partial-day system to have as many schools operating as possible. IT will be SECOND semester, so this to me means that the schools will expect everyone to have attended elsewhere and not to have waited to go back to school until then. Also, parents of school children can file a letter of intent with the state to home school their children, which is a viable option until schools open then. There are many home school information web sites if you do a google search.

Yes, East Jefferson High School suffered extensive damage to the roof, as well as Bonnabel High, with King High sustaining roof damage, but not as extensive as the previous two schools. To find out official details, go to www.louisianaschools.net. Click on the Jefferson Parish link from the home page. The goal of the school system is to open the schools, that can be used, on October 3, 2005. Those schools that cannot be used will be platooned with those schools that have little to no damage. Whether or not the schools will be opened on that date will be determined by the number of employees available and, more importantly, the availability of drinking water. Electricity has been restored to a good deal of the parish, so power should not be an issue. We shall see.
