I'm a med-student who rents on Lake Ave. in Metairie. My ID is from my hometown, but I do have one post-card with my Metairie address on it. Will this be enough to get me in? Are they actually checking IDs? Also, I know there is a lot of guardsmen there now, but I'd still feel more comfortable going armed. However, I think if I am armed I might need to be more afraid of the Guard than looters. Are they even letting people in with guns? Or did they throw out the second amendment? Thanks for the help.

First see the topic below on re-entry.
Second Jeff Parish is under martial law and basically this means you have no rights.
As far as carrying a weapon - do you have a permit for a hand gun or are you talking about a rifle or shotgun? I'm sure some who have returned have brought "weapons" however unless you're standing on your property (or in your case inside your apartment) and can prove it - if you show a weapon you stand a high degree of probabilty for getting arrested if not outright shot.
Lastly the Guard have been brought in to protect people and property, including you and yours; and to maintain order and all residents of the parish should be grateful for this - if you're "afraid" of the national guard then maybe you and your weapon should stay where you're at.

Thanks for reply hogdad, Perhaps i should have explained myself better, just going for brevity. I have read every topic and article on re-entry that I could find, and none answer my question or they contradict each other. I was referring to shotgun or rifle, don't own a handgun. I am greatly appreciative of what the guard is doing, but they cannot be everywheres at once. I don't like relying on other people for my own self-defense when I can protect myself. And I know the guard is in a difficult stressful situation, whereby their first thought upon seeing a person with a gun may not be that they are a law-abiding citizen just trying to protect themself. Clears things up?

Writting particularly online is always difficult and subject to interpretation, so yes you have made things clear, thanks!
Anyone going in needs to exercise caution - J.P. from all reports is as safe as it can be but it is a disaster zone and there is always the possibility of certain low-life scum *%^$#$'s trying to take advantage of the situation.
Som key points:
Many streets have been cleared but some remain blocked with trees, power lines and other debris, so you may have to wind your way around
Many trees are down and houses which otherwise would have been intact were damaged to varying degrees
While most structures are intact there are pockets where house's have been severly damaged - my sister's Bro-n-laws which is in Kenner (near W. Napoleon) lost 1/2 the roof and basically split in half (no tree damage - may have been wind or a tornado)
For the houses that had water in them (whether flood or rain)- mold is taking over and it does pose a health risk. My sister's in Kenner had 1 - 2 ft and the entire 1st floor is now a mold farm (walls, counter tops, furniture)
Everyone I've talked to says the smell is remarkably bad
Good luck getting in, take care and hopefully you won't have any problems. If you can, post when you get back and tell us about your experience.

Since the parish is closed now, i don't know what difference this makes, but.... We left Baton Rouge about 4:30 and made it to Lake Ave. apt about 6:30. No ID checks, no problems on roads, and no looters to shoot. Apparently we had about 6 inches of water and there was quite a colorful fungus collection starting on the walls and elsewhere. I don't know how widespread the flooding was in the part of town. My apartment is at Lake Ave and Lilac. I'm currently airing out my laundry and hoping to recover all the nice fancy doctor clothes I had recently accumulated. Hopefully they will lax our dress code for awhile, at least till FEMA or our next loan check comes thru. Hope most people fair better, many faired worse. Thanks for the good info posted on this site.
